Our Mentors

The following people are members of our style that have helped to shape what we do here at Gustavo Machado Brazilian Jiu-jitsu - South Carolina.  They are our instructors, our friends, and people who we go to for advise and encouragement.  Without these people, our school would not be what is it today.

Gustavo "Guga" Machado (Gracie Barra Black Belt/ 2nd Degree Black Belt / Founder of Gustavo Machado BJJ )

It goes without saying that without Gustavo, we probably wouldn't have our jiu-jitsu program.  Gustavo was the first jiu-jitsu instructor that I met that made me want to learn more about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.  He demeanor and teaching abilities make him a great instructor and a good friend.  I am very proud to be a part of the Gustavo Machado Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Association.

Roberto "Gordo" Corrêa De Lima (Gracie Barra Black Belt/ 3rd Degree Black Belt )

Although I had heard a lot about Gordo from Gustavo, it wasn't until October of 2005 that I actually got to meet him.  He is a very technical instructor and skilled ground fighter.  It will be a pleasure to train with him again some day.

Helio "Soneca" Moriera (Gracie Barra Black Belt/ 4th Degree Black Belt )

I had heard a little about Soneca prior to meeting him in Americus, Ga.  But, true to his name sake, he was quick to spot.  It was hard to miss a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt that looked like he had just woken up.  Soneca was very fun to be around, and made lots of jokes during the seminar.  But when it came time to demonstrate techniques, he was nothing but business.  He was a very entertaining instructor and an excellent ground fighter.  I hope to get to train with him again soon when he is in the area.

Ken Hudson (Purple Belt / Head Instructor - Family Martial Arts Center, Americus, GA )

I have known Ken for several years, but it wasn't until becoming part of GMBJJ that he and I had a common connection.  But nonetheless, Ken has always been willing to give of himself to help those in the martial arts community.  It is because of Ken that I have gotten to meet Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Gustavo.  If not for Ken's friendly invitations, I may not have met Gustavo and decided to continue training in BJJ.

Bobby Wilson (Purple Belt / Head Instructor - Warrior Jiu-jitsu, Evans, GA )

It was through Ken Hudson that I got to meet Bobby Wilson.  In the short time that I have known him, I have found him to be a very humble and honorable man.  Bobby and his students have visited my school on several occasions, and they have always been a great group of people.  Bobby is a tough individual and a skilled fighter.  I am glad to be associated with him and his school.

Joshua Miller (Brown Belt / Head Instructor - Foca Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Gloverville, SC )

Although I met Josh before, it was Bobby Wilson that encouraged me to train with Josh.  After only a few training sessions, I found Josh to be very competent, very skilled, and very humble.  He is just another fine example of the type of jiu-jitsu practitioners that I wish to train with and associate myself with.  His classes are very smooth and very relaxed.  I can only hope to become as good of a jiu-jitsu instructor as he is.
